MEN CHARGED AFTER INSURANCE FRAUD SCHEME
Two local men are facing felony charges after state police say they intentionally set fire to a sports car in an alleged insurance fraud scheme near Trout Run. According to the Sun Gazette, Anthony James Jr. of Eldred Township and Linton Hooper of Williamsport are accused of torching James’ 2015 Maserati along Four Mile Road back in May. Investigators say the car was towed to the location and set on fire with gasoline so a false theft claim could be filed. Both men were arrested, posted bail, and are scheduled for preliminary hearings next week.
VICTIM OF FATAL MOTORCYCLE CRASH IDENTIFIED
A Williamsport motorcyclist has been identified following a fatal three-vehicle crash on Market Street. The Lycoming County Coroner says 33 year-old Drew Geier of Williamsport was riding north when a sedan merged into his lane and struck his motorcycle, ejecting him into the path of a southbound SUV. Police say he was rushed to UPMC Williamsport, where lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead just after 6pm The coroner says Geier died from multiple blunt force injuries, and toxicology results are pending.
LIHEAP APPLICATION PERIOD OPEN IN PA
Pennsylvania’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, will start taking applications today after being delayed by the federal government shutdown. The program helps pay heating bills with grants of 200 to 1,000 dollars, and earlier this month the state moved up the winter shutoff moratorium to protect families. NEW RADIO NETWORK FOR HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS
The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association is launching the new PIAA Radio Network, the first statewide audio network of its kind for the organization. The free service debuts Thursday with live coverage of the PIAA football championship games. Fans can listen through the PIAA website or on YouTube, with rotating broadcast teams calling the action. Officials say the network expands statewide access and visibility for student-athletes and their schools.
OWNER CHARGED WITH ARSON FOR SETTING HIS CABIN ON FIRE
A 65-year-old Union County man is in jail after state police say he intentionally set fire to a cabin on his own property in West Buffalo Township. According to the Standard Journal Benjamin Houdeshell faces multiple felony charges including arson and causing a catastrophe after the early-morning fire destroyed the cabin. Troopers say Houdeshell admitted starting the fire and warned there was gunpowder and propane on site. He was arraigned and jailed on 25-thousand dollars bail. A preliminary hearing is set for December ninth.
TRIO CAUGHT STEALING CLOTHING IN SNYDER COUNTY
Three people are facing charges after a series of retail thefts at the Lowe’s store in Monroe Township, Snyder County. According to state police, Douglas Miernicki, of Coal Township, Tanika Marie Vallati, of Richfield, and Amanda Leigh Zoch, of Selinsgrove, are accused of stealing clothing on multiple occasions in October. Police say the total value taken was 353 dollars. Zoch faces a felony retail theft charge due to prior convictions. Preliminary hearings are scheduled for December 15th.
SOJOURNER TRUTH TO REWORK HOUSE OF HOPE PROGRAM
Sojourner Truth Ministries is preparing to revamp and eventually reopen its House of Hope program for homeless women after it was forced to close due to financial challenges. According to the Sun-Gazette, Executive Director Pastor Angelique says the reworked program will now require participants to contribute financially while learning job and life skills. The goal is to help women become self-sustaining and give back to the community while the ministry secures funding and staff.
FREE FUN AT EAGLE GRANGE IN MONTGOMERY THIS WEEKEND
Families are invited to register now for a free holiday event at Eagle Grange this weekend.
