WILLIAMSPORT WOMAN FACES ASSAULT CHARGES AFTER SELINSGROVE HOTEL INCIDENT
A Williamsport woman is facing assault charges after an incident at a Selinsgrove hotel. Police say 43-year-old Rebecka Eileen Rowland allegedly threw a full beer can at her fiancé, striking him in the face, then used scissors to injure his thumb. Officers responded to the Travelodge on Susquehanna Trail after two hang-up 911 calls. Rowland is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment and is free on unsecured bail.
WILLIAMSPORT COUNCIL APPROVES FUNDING FOR HOME RULE STUDY
Williamsport City Council has approved the first phase of the Government Study Commission’s budget, with about 90-percent of consultant costs covered by a state grant. The Pennsylvania Economy League will be paid 83-thousand dollars to assist the commission as it studies whether Williamsport should adopt a Home Rule charter. The state grant covers more than 74-thousand dollars. Home Rule could change how the city handles taxation, zoning and government structure, with voters ultimately deciding whether to approve a charter.
PENNSYLVANIA COULD RECEIVE MORE THAN $500 MILLION IN META SETTLEMENT
Pennsylvania could receive more than 500-million dollars through a multistate settlement with Meta aimed at protecting children online. Attorney General Dave Sunday says the agreement requires new safeguards on Facebook and Instagram, including daily time limits, nighttime restrictions, school-hour notification blocks and stronger age verification. Pennsylvania is expected to receive 516-million dollars over several years, with the total potentially reaching 729-million.
LABOR DAY FLY-IN BREAKFAST SET FOR GRAND CANYON REGIONAL AIRPORT
A Labor Day weekend tradition is returning to the Wellsboro area. The Canyon Pilots Association will host an all-you-can-eat fly-in breakfast Sunday, September 6th, from 8 a.m. to noon at Grand Canyon Regional Airport in Delmar Township. The event includes breakfast, aircraft displays and, weather permitting, plane rides over the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. Proceeds support aviation scholarships for Tioga County residents and airport projects.
WATSONTOWN BRICK FACES NEARLY $500,000 IN PROPOSED OSHA FINES
A Northumberland County brick manufacturer is facing nearly half-a-million dollars in proposed federal fines over silica dust exposure. OSHA cited Watsontown Brick Company after a February inspection found workers were allegedly exposed to unsafe levels of respirable crystalline silica. Investigators say the company failed to correct hazards, require respirators and conduct proper testing. OSHA issued nine violations, including three classified as willful, with proposed penalties totaling more than 496-thousand dollars.
DISPUTE CONTINUES OVER PENNSYLVANIA MEASLES-ASSOCIATED DEATHS
A dispute continues over Pennsylvania’s two reported measles-associated deaths. The Lancaster County coroner says an infant who tested positive for measles actually died from a ruptured spleen. State health officials stand by the classification, saying measles was present but may not have caused the death. Pennsylvania has reported 393 measles cases this year, but only 1 case reported in Lycoming County.
HUGHESVILLE CONSIDERS NEW RULES FOR DATA CENTER DEVELOPMENT
Hughesville Borough Council is considering an ordinance to regulate where data centers could be located in the community. The borough solicitor says the measure could limit facilities to certain zoning districts and set rules for noise, environmental concerns and buffer zones. Officials say state law would not allow the borough to ban data centers outright. Council did not indicate whether any company is currently proposing a data center in Hughesville.
WILLIAMSPORT COMMUNITY CELEBRATION TO HONOR P.D. MITCHELL
If you knew P.D. Mitchell, or know the impact he had on Williamsport, a community celebration in his honor is set for Saturday at Flanigan Park. The Boy Mom Marathon is hosting the block-party-style event from 3:30 to 7 p.m., featuring food, music, games and family activities. Mitchell was a longtime community leader who helped organize youth sports and the first African-American bowling team in Lycoming County. The event will also highlight youth empowerment and local history.
