INTOXICATED MAN WITH A GUN BREAKS INTO HOME
A Williamsport man was threatened in his own home by a drunken man who entered illegally and brandished a handgun this week. Karl Matz called 911 after confronting an intoxicated man who had entered his W. Fourth Street residence last Monday. When police arrived, they took Todd Leta of Old Lycoming Township into custody. He was jailed after being determined to be unfit for arraignment over charges of felony trespassing, loitering and public drunkenness among other charges. Leta was eventually arraigned after a few hours and released on bail.
VENUE CHANGED FOR POLITICAL DEBATES
The venue has been changed for the upcoming political forums for Lycoming County commissioner and City of Williamsport council and mayoral candidates, The public is invited to attend the forums, which will be held in the Michael Ross Room on the third floor of the Trade and Transit Center – 144 West Third St in Williampsort. This Monday’s forum at 7pm will feature the candidates running for Lycoming County Commissioner, who will address questions from a reporter panel and the audience. The Williamsport Sun Gazette and Backyard Broadcasting forums will be moderated by Jason Fink of the Williamsport Lycoming Chamber of Commerce and broadcast live on 1079 WLMY.
WASD ENROLLMENT UP
The Williamsport Area School Board announced at their meeting this week that enrollment is up by 15 students overall with some lower numbers than last year in the middle school grades. Officials say there are 360 seniors in this year’s graduating class. According to the Sun Gazette, the board also made decisions about an inter-district agreement for Title 1 services between Montoursville Area School District and Williamsport area Schools for some students in the district.
JOB CREATION AND RETENTION IN MILTON
Thanks to a project by the Governor’s Action Team, almost 100 jobs will be available in Milton. Custom Container Solutions has purchased the building formerly owned by Crest Homes in the Milton Industrial Park. According to WKOK, the steel container manufacturer has promised a 5.5 million dollar investment creating 36 and retaining 60 jobs statewide over 3 years. The Governor’s Action Team is a single point of contact in the state for relocating businesses in Pennsylvania.\
FRAUD CHARGE FOR ALLEGED SUSPECT IN HOMICIDE
Police are declining to say more about a man who is suspected in a homicide case, but have arrested him for access device fraud. According to North Central PA dot com, police report that 22 year old Jason Michah Forsyth, of Williamsport, stole his girlfriend’s credit card and made digital purchases of an app in August of 2019. Old Lycoming Township Police have made statements that Forsyth is the subject of a homicide investigation in a recent affidavit. Forsyth was incarcerated at the Lycoming County Prison, but his case has been assigned to the McKean County Assistant DA
TWO ANNOUNCE WRITE-IN CANDIDACY
There will be two more choices for county commissioner this fall as two declare their write-in candidacy for the upcoming November 5th election. According to the Sun Gazette, Steve Brady, Gamble Township Supervisor and Chad Riley, constable for Cogan House Township issued a joint statement Tuesday announcing their candidacies. The public is invited to attend the upcoming political forum between the candidates for Lycoming County commissioner this Monday October 21st at 7pm in the Michael Ross Room on the third floor of the Trade and Transit Center – 144 West Third St.
RESIDENTS WANT SAFER ROADWAY LAYOUT
Residents told the Woodward Township supervisors during their meeting Wednesday that construction along Route 220 is unsafe as the State Department of Transportation works to redesign the highway. PennDOT says the 220 Safety Corridor construction is underway with funding in place, but residents are concerned about the gaps along the state-owned highway allowing traffic to unsafely cross or make U-Turns. Township supervisors noted that the road decisions were made by the state. The next meeting is Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. at the township building.
LEWISBURG TRAFFIC STUDY RESULTS
A traffic study has identified tremendous growth and big numbers for vehicles and pedestrians using the roadway along the Market Street Corridor in Lewisburg. A public meeting which addressed about 100 people Wednesday, was hosted by Lewisburg Borough Special Projects and revealed that about 16,000 vehicles and 1500 pedestrians crossing the street, use the area daily. WKOK reports that after a rise in traffic in 2017, a study and merchant survey was planned. Steps will be taken next to make decisions on how to lower those numbers.
CANDLELIGHT VIGIL HONORS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
A candlelight vigil was held yesterday in Williamsport to honor nationwide victims of domestic violence since 2016. The event called “An Empty Place at the Table” was sponsored by the YWCA who provide ongoing efforts to educate the community about domestic violence. Law enforcement officials and others read the names of victims and cited statistics, recognizing survivors who have broken a cycle of abuse. According to the Sun Gazette, the YWCA’s Wise Options program has supported more than a thousand victims of domestic abuse in Lycoming County last year alone. The Wise Options domestic violence hotline is 800-326-8483.
