SAYRE WOMAN JAILED AFTER CHILD FOUND ON ROADWAY
A Sayre woman is jailed after police say her nonverbal child walked more than half a mile from home wearing only a diaper. State police say 41-year-old Nicole Rafferty left the child with two juveniles while she was working, even though Children and Youth Services had told her a week earlier they were not suitable caregivers. A driver spotted the child on Litchfield Road and called for help. Rafferty is charged with endangering the welfare of children and remains in Bradford County Prison on 40-thousand dollars bail.
TRUCK DRIVER CHARGED IN TROOPER’S DEATH
A Massachusetts truck driver is now facing charges in the crash that killed a Pennsylvania state trooper along I-81 in Schuylkill County. Police say 33-year-old Michael Bon, of Brockton, veered onto the shoulder Wednesday morning in Butler Township and hit a stopped tractor-trailer while Trooper Michael Pahira Junior was conducting an inspection. Pahira was pinned under the truck and later died at a hospital. Bon is charged with homicide by vehicle, aggravated assault by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, reckless endangerment and traffic violations. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 16.
GREGG TOWNSHIP DATA CENTER HEARING RESCHEDULED
Gregg Township supervisors have rescheduled a public hearing on a proposed data center in Allenwood. The hearing is set for July 20th at 6 p.m. at the Warrior Run Fire Department Social Hall. Supervisors will consider PNK Group’s request to allow a data center inside an existing 479-thousand-square-foot building at Great Stream Commons. The original hearing was delayed so the township could gather more information about potential noise levels.
BUFFALO VALLEY RAIL TRAIL REOPENS
The Buffalo Valley Rail Trail is officially back open between Lewisburg and Mifflinburg after a spring maintenance project. The Union County trail stretches about nine and a half miles through Buffalo Valley, with access points, parking and facilities along the route. The Trail Authority thanked users for their patience, along with DCNR and Union County. Before returning, visitors are asked to review posted trail rules at union-county-trails-dot-com and help keep the trail clean, safe and courteous for all.
LYCOMING COUNTY MEN CHARGED IN COLUMBIA COUNTY SHOOTING
Two Lycoming County men are facing attempted homicide charges after a shooting in Columbia County. State police say troopers were called Tuesday afternoon to a home on Benjamin Road in Jackson Township for a man with a gunshot wound. The victim was flown to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. Police say 22-year-old Aiden LaForest of Williamsport and 23-year-old Raymond Poust of Montoursville were arrested Wednesday. Both are being held in Columbia County Prison on 500-thousand dollars bail.
LYCOMING COUNTY SEEKS STATE HELP ON GUN VIOLENCE
Lycoming County officials say they are working with state agencies to address violent crime after the June 29th shooting that killed 18-year-old Nasir Kramer and injured two others. Commissioners say they have started conversations with the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency and the Office of Gun Violence Prevention. The goal is to seek funding for strategic planning sessions focused on youth and gun violence. County leaders also plan to meet with the mayor and city courts later this month.
JUDGE DENIES BID TO REMOVE MUNCY TOWNSHIP SUPERVISORS
A Muncy Township auditor has lost her bid to have two township supervisors removed from office. Lycoming County President Judge Eric Linhardt ruled against Melissa Wertman-Doyle’s civil case involving board chair Terri Lauchle and vice chair Denise Artley. Wertman-Doyle alleged misconduct, including Sunshine Act and ethics violations, but the judge found she did not meet the requirements to bring the removal action. She has 20 days to file an amended complaint.
NEW MOTORCYCLE TRAILS OPEN IN WEISER STATE FOREST
A new motorized recreation area is opening in Weiser State Forest. DCNR says 20 miles of single-track trails across 725 acres are now available at Catawissa South in the Catawissa Recreation Area, spanning Schuylkill and Luzerne counties. The trails are open from sunrise to sunset for dual-sport motorcycles, but ATVs are not permitted. Seasonal passes go on sale Monday through September 27th.
